The Common Application For Tact Switch

Oct 27, 2022

The tact switch is a switch that is used every day, but most of the time people don't see it. Computer keyboards, hidden under each key are tact switches that are small and thin but extremely durable and can function well for years or even decades.

Tact switches are small electromechanical devices used for mounting on printed circuit boards (PCBS). They are compact, compact and don't rise above the PCB, an important feature when designing keyboards for thin devices such as laptops.

Given the limited space inside the keyboard, the thin design means that the tact  switch competes for space with the battery, screen and other components. To solve this problem, the touch switch is designed in a compact side-by-side layout, an important feature of the keyboard.

Tapping the tact switch provides tactile feedback to the user when the switch or button is in contact with the underlying control panel (usually a printed circuit board). Tact switches include dome switches located under a rubber bubble or dome. When the dome switch is pressed, the dome collapses and makes the switch contact. Momentary tact switches are available in a variety of sizes and actuator styles and support leds. Tact switches are designed for keyboard, keypad, instrument and interface control panel applications. They are used in large numbers in aerospace, communications, defense and all electronic instrument applications. The dome switch is used for keyword and film keyboards and is relatively quiet to operate.
